November 2019

At our meeting this month we welcomed artists who responded to our call for new members.  We all had chance to look at a portfolio of their work and chat with them about their aspirations.  More on this in January!

We also had our Mentor, Diane Bates with us to help critique our individual pieces as we work towards our next exhibition at Burton Constable Hall (27th April to 26th May 2020).  The theme for this exhibition is ‘East meets West’.

Thoughts were also starting to turn to Christmas and there were plenty of smaller pieces of work on the go featuring the usual red and green colour palette.  Sue and Gina progressed with their stunning landscapes whilst Sarah worked on the next in her series of animal pieces.

Sadly we say goodbye to two long standing members of the Group, Carol Coleman and Carol Seaman.  We thank them for their contribution to the Group both at meetings and in our exhibitions and we wish them well in their future endeavours.

Call for new members

Welcome new members clip art
At our meeting this month, we agreed to recruit some new members to the Group.  Here is our advert with details of how to apply should you be interested in joining us!

Call For New Members

Founded in 2003, Diverse Threads is a textile and mixed media art group based in North Yorkshire. Members are self-motivated and committed to developing their own work under the guidance of their mentor Diane Bates.  In addition to meeting nine times per year on the outskirts of York we also exhibit together. A number of members are also professional artists in their own right.

We are currently looking to recruit up to three new members for the Group. You could be an established textile or mixed media artist, but we would be equally as happy to support emerging textile artists, or someone who has not yet had much opportunity to show their work.

There are some financial implications associated with being a member to meet the costs of our meeting room and mentor. You would need to be committed to our meetings, be willing to assist in the organising and stewarding of exhibitions and activities, and to exhibiting with us at the end of 2020 and beyond.

To be considered for the group you should in the first instance, email an expression of interest to Sandra Middleton (sandramiddleton2706@gmail.com) giving a brief outline of your experience, preferred media, qualifications and previous exhibitions if applicable.  Along with your contact details, you should include up to six images of your recent work.  Applications will be discussed by the Group in the early Autumn with a shortlist of candidates being invited to bring their work along to a future meeting of the Group after which any formal offers to join will then be made.

February 2019

We had our mentor Diane Bates working with us today.  She shared some of her latest work in progress and sketches for a forthcoming exhibition at Wentworth Woodhouse - the boot was definitely on the other foot and it really did feel quite strange for us to be critiquing her work for a change!

It was a busy meeting with Carol, Sarah and Cathy working on their April York Open Studio exhibits, Jane and Gwen were working towards an exhibition during April/May at Art in the Mill, Knaresborough whilst others continued to work on pieces for our Diverse Threads Spring Showcase at the Tithe Barn, Nether Poppleton at the end of May.  Sue shared with us her completed commission for an ecclesiastical banner and talk turned to a future oriental body of work.

Once again a diverse range of techniques on display and thanks to Gina, we even managed our own car boot at lunchtime!

January 2019

Our first meeting of the New Year and everyone was busy; some working on commissions and some on their individual pieces for the forthcoming exhibition at the Tithe Barn, Nether Poppleton on 25/26 May.  As usual a diverse range of skills were evident!
